Every July I try to read 'Gone With The Wind'. It takes on more meaning when it is literally steaming, wretchedly, sickening, hot outside. It makes me appreciate my air conditioned home and certainly my food! It makes me value my free country and the soldiers that keep war far from my homeland. It is a great July book. It also makes me feel like I should be burying cash and jewels in my backyard or in my corset in case the d--- Yankees ever come looking for me.
Every time I read it I love Scarlett and I love Rhett and I love Melly and I love Mammy. Is it possible to love such different kinds of people? It must be. (However, I like Rhett, have never cared for Ashely.)
The words on the page play like music. Anyway I love the book. Does anyone else have any great summer time reads?
(Sidenote: Evelyn Keyes who played Suellen, Scarlett's younger sister, just passed away at the age of 91, on the 4th of July this year)

That's so funny Heidi about reading Gone with the Wind during the sweltering hot summer. I love that idea. I actually just started reading Gone with the Wind this week because it's been stuck in a box for two years and I finally unpacked it! I know Leslie wanted us to all read the same book and discuss it. I think Gone with the Wind would be a great one to start with. I love all those characters too and No I cannot stand Ashley! Blahhh!! Thanks for the great summer reading pick!
I LOVE Gone With the Wind. It never even occured to me to put it on my summer reading list. But it's a GREAT Summer read. I need to hurry and finish my current read and then head to the library for this one. I think we need to schedule on line book club and meet at a blog and discuss books!
So lets all meet back here in a few days and discuss! Anyone?
Sounds great to me!
MA VISIT TO GEOR..GIA
I did visit Atlanta and saw the home of Margaret Mitchell, it was a small duplex built about the 1930's. I saw a mattress made from corn cobs at a lovley outdoor museum. And to our amazement saw the THe Fox Theatre where Gone with the Wind Opened and even better the most wonderful comedian ever....Red Skelton. He just would not stop, he went from one hilarious skit to another. Dad and I laughed until we cried. We did learn a valuable lesson there, never stay later than the other convention guests...it was much too quiet. We even went to the Underground (spooky) Atlanta was so green and lush. We never read Gone with the Wind, but we have seen the movie several times and feel terrible to see Atlanta burned. Never cared much for Scarlett, but adored Mammie. She is an excellent role model, cause she always tells what's fittin and what ain't. My Mom had a souvenir program from Gone With the Wind, id disappeared somewhere at the bottom of her cedar chest...thanks for reminding us of the past. Love Dad and Mum
