Why does the 'first day of school' always make me think of this?

Maybe because I sometimes feel like this?
No really, I think it is because I have been reading the Anne books again and I love them again. Anne is such an enchanting character to watch unfold and Lucy Maud Montgomery 's writing style is poetic.I love school days and school supplies. Don't you?

The smell of pencils sharpened, and peachies, and crayolas wrapped in paper, the pink pearl erasers (some kid once ate Mikey's pink pearl at school), and even old Elmer's glue has a certain nostalgia.
Mmmmmm.....somehow new pencils, crayon boxes, and new supplies makes me feel organized, even though I probably have 562 broken crayons nubs hidden away in a cupboard somewhere. I guess it feels like a mini new year's...the crisp fall is approaching and I have a chance to pink pearl erase the past and start afresh.

Anyway, I hope you all have a GREAT first day of school. I hope that none of you break slates over your classmate's heads (especially since some of your classmates are your brothers and sisters!) or over your student's heads!
Three cheers for the start of another school year.
***Hey! Comment with your first days memoirs.....best and/or worst...***
(One bad year would have to be the year I wore my huge striped big wool school-shopping-with-Dad-sweater and died of heat in southern california, sweating all day long and even walked
home....what was I thinking?)

Heidi Leigh,
I have that picture of you in that sweater with a note from you hanging in my office/bathroom! It's on my bulletin board and if I were computer savvy I would post it on my blog. It is hilarious. I love how we lived in Southern California and always bought and wore sweaters for the first day. What were we thinking?
Did the kid who ate Mikey's pink pearl eraser think it was bubble gum. I once took a bite of Laurie's lipstick because it was pink. I was little, but I remember. A big chomp too!
Also, you are posting the best pictures. First Lucy and now Anne. I love Anne's anger. "Carrots!"
And then to Marilla, "Very hard, I'm afraid."
I never wanted Anne to grow up. She was so funny when she was young. She is my favorite when she is young and impulsive.
Well, I'm glad you're back on board and blogging.
It's nice to know we all love new school supplies.
I have a whole new drawer full, which I just organized, and it sent me into a frenzy and I ended up cleaning out EVERY single cupboard in my kitchen! It reminded me of Mom with The Attic.
All right, Heidi, I am going to try and talk Mallory into figuring out how to post your big wool sweater picture.
Leslie's right. You don have the best graphics! I love Anne Shirley and all your school supplies. And I love it when Anne says,"The peddler we met on the road today" Now I'm going to have to read all the books and watch the movie. Anne Shirley is perfect for back to school.
It is easy to recall our favorite school experience. We once received a telephone call from our Spanish professor offering encouragement and comfort to an awkward senior citizen student. It has changed my self-doubts about learning ever since. Funny I can't remember his name. But it has been said, "one kind word can change your world forever." Reading and writing are the best tools that have ever been invented. Sincerely, A Life Long Learner
I love your new post. The first day of school is such an exciting day. Unfortunately I really cannot remember one when I was little. (Big surprise) but I have the same vague recollections of sweating, ok just getting redder in the face, from a too hot outfit.
I love Anne Shirley too when she was young and always getting into scrapes. A great read for the start of a new school year. I also love the line from You've got Mail about the fall and starting school-"I would send you a bouquet of freshly sharpened pencils..."
I bought a dress suit, a 80's esprit grown up looking dress suit to wear with knee high brown leather boots for my senior year. What a joke! I love Anne too, and I wish she would stay young, just like I wish for all of our little students.
